Adam’s Peak

Adam’s peak mountain is located in the Ratnapura district, 40 kilometres Northeast of Ratnapura town and 32kilometres Southwest of Hatton. With a height of 7,360 feet this mountain has been a center of pilgrimage for more than 1000 years. It is best-known for the 1.8 m rock shape in the summit known as the Shri Pada meaning the sacred footprint, which is believed to be a footprint of Lord Buddha. The mountain lies in the Peak wilderness reserve which is filled with multiple species of flora and fauna of which many are endemic. The pilgrims visit the mount starting on Poya day in December. The season runs uptil Vesak poya in May. To get to the summit climbers can leave from the town of Dalhousie for a four-hour climb, 33 km by road southwest of Hatton. Or a seven-hour climb from Ratnapura via the Carney Estate.
