Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura the capital of the North-central province is the ancient most city of the cultural triangle. Evidence indicates that civilizations existed here from 10 BC. Among the many temples, ruins and structures which are remnants of the past lies the Sri Maha bodhiya (Temple of the Sacred Tree) which is a temple built around a Bodhi tree which was brought to Srilanka in 245 BC by Sanghamitta Thera. Since Anuradhapura is a central city it is well connected to other main cities by road and rail. Getting to Anuradhapura from Colombo takes a minimum of 5 hours by train. Getting around the city by bicycle is the easiest way of exploring this ancient city.
