Mirissa

Mirissa is a fishing port and is the largest on the south Srilankan coast. The town is located 4 kilometers southeast of Weligama. Tourism caught up in Mirissa in the mid 90’s. Then onward tourist populations have increased every year. Mirissa is well known for its whale and dolphin watching locations. Whale watching observation boats are operated by private companies throughout the year but the best time of year to spot whales is November-April. Apart from Whales, Mirissa beach is a safe place to swim given the calm sea and clear waters. Being 150 kilometers apart, getting to Mirissa from Colombo will take roughly around 2hrs 40mins by the southern expressway.
