Nuwara Eliya (Little England)

Nuwara Eliya is a city in the hill country. Nuwera Eliya means “city of light” in Sinhalese. The city is blessed with a scenic landscape and cool climate. Lying at 1,868 m above sea level the surrounding area is an important location for black-tea production. The city remained the escapade of English tea planters during colonial times whom favored the city’s cool climes and misty weather. Known as ‘little England’ the city does have an English country village look and feel to it. Close to the city is Pidurutalagala, the tallest mountain peak in Srilanka. April is spring season In Nuwera-Eliya when its flocked by tourists mostly locals , who enjoy watching horse racing and car-races, while celebrating the Sri Lankan New Year. Travelling from Colombo to Nuwera Eliya takes 1 hour by air taxi or 5 hours by road.
