Pinnawala
Pinnawala is a village in Kegalle District of Sri Lanka and lies 90 kilometers away from Colombo. It is best known for the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which is a nursery cum breeding ground for wild Asian elephants. Pinnawala is notable for having one of the largest herds of captive elephants in the world. Originally founded in order to care and protect the orphaned un-weaned wild elephants found in the forests, now the orphanage encompasses a 25-acre land and serves as an important tourist attraction in the island.
